New Haven is Mecca for pizza
lovers, but some of Milford's
pizzerias have achieved New
Haven quality. I particularly
recommend
Papa's Pizza &
Pasta
, 258 Naugatuck Ave.,
about half way between Route
1 and the beach. 874-0215,
closed Monday. It's as good
as you'll get on Wooster
Street, and there are no
tourists lined up for hours
waiting to get in.

There's no indoor eating, so
take it home (drive REALLY
fast if you want it hot when
you get home), or use one of
their picnic tables. Pies are
baked in a brick oven. The
thin crust is absolutely perfect,
not slimy-sloppy, or rock hard,
but firm and chewy, like a
good bagel.

al Dente Restaurant at 128
Bridgeport Ave. is also
extremely good. 878-2727.
Their clams casino pie is a
winner, and there's a nice
dining room and superb pasta
fagiole.

Armellino's at 667 Bridgeport
Ave. makes very good pies,
but not as good as Papa's or
al Dente.  They're one of the
few restaurants that make
pasta fagiole in both red and
white versions. It's a pretty
place, with indoor and outdoor
dining, and they do catering
(but no pizza delivery).
874-6709

Stay away from
Peter Pan
Pizza
on the Milford Green.
They advertise that they were
voted best in Milford, but the
people who voted were in a
nursing home, and their taste
buds died years ago.

Franco's Pizza at 58 River
Street earns a mixed review.
Their pies, particularly with
meat toppings, are often dried
out. Veggie pies, such as a
mushroom and onion combo
can be very good, especially if
you ask for extra sauce.
Delivery is available. 877-6180

If you like Sicilian pizza, cross
the Housatonic and check out
Villa Pizza in the shopping
center opposite Home Depot
in Stratford. Also in Stratford,
we like
Juliano's very much,
at 865 Barnum Ave. Cut Off,
opposite Burlington Coat
Factory. 377-2570. Very big
variety of pizza toppings --
even shrimp or chicken.
There's also a big selection of
delicious non-pizza items,
ranging from wedges to
seafood fra diavolo. Fast,
friendly service. Reasonable
prices. Beer and wine. You
can get quarts of sauce and
soup to go, as well as party
platters. One warning: no
credit cards!

Since I was born in New York
and grew up in New Haven, I
just can't consider Chicago
deep dish pizza to be
real
pizza, but I am willing to admit
that the things that look sort of
like pizza at
Pizzeria Uno
Chicago Bar and Grill do
taste good. Uno's at 1061
Boston Post Road. No
delivery, but you can take out.
876-1160. Keep an eye on
prices. We recently had a
"regular" size pie (like most
restaurants' small) with
mushroom, onion, and
eggplant that cost about $17
-- WAY TOO MUCH.

If you're ever invited to a
social affair or business event
catered by
Big Green Truck
Pizza, you're in for a treat.
The truck carries a high
temperature wood burning
brick oven, and produces
absolutely spectacular pies
every three or four minutes.
I've never had better.
Best bagels (which to me,
means most like traditional
New York bagels) in the area
are at
Village Bagels, 1590
Boston Post Rd., near
Linens-n-Things. I like to
sharpen my teeth with a
crunchy bacon-and-egg on
an onion bagel. Ironically,
until a couple of years ago,
Village had the absolutely
WORST bagels in town.
Maybe they read my previous
review. Now the worst are at
Dunkin' Donuts. Too mushy.

Bagel Bar at 1085
Bridgeport Ave. is a very
close Number Two, and has
gotten much better recently. I
can definitely recommend
them.

Bagel Bar was previously
known as
BagelZ, and their
bagels were more like rolls
with holes in the center: too
big and too fluffy.
The Chinese food situation in
Milford is very frustrating.
Some restaurants have good
entrees, but flavorless soups.
Some have great soups, but
terrible entrees.
Jani in the
shopping center on Cherry
Street, is almost a museum.
It's beautiful to look at and the
service is usually quite good,
but the food is mostly
mediocre. They have
Japanese as well as Chinese
dishes, and lots of fancy
"Polynesian" drinks.

One pleasant surprise is
Hong Kong, a little
hole-in-the-wall in the small
Red Bush Plaza shopping
center near Krispy Kreme. Not
only do they cook good soups
AND good entrees, but they
can make a crisp eggroll, and
they have great lunch specials
at just $4.50. Delivery is free
with a $10 order. 877-5901.

If you're willing to try
something beyond the usual
spare ribs and eggrolls, we
strongly recommend
Shanghai Gourmet. They
have a mix of Chinese and
Thai dishes that you won't find
elsewhere in the area. Food is
delicious, good to look at, and
reasonably priced. The
handsome restaurant is in the
same building where the
former Lee's Seafood used to
be. 533 Boston Post Road in
Orange. 891-8788
SEAFOOD OBITUARIES
Yoshida Japanese
Restaurant
at 439 Boston
Post Rd, 874-0475, has a big
menu with both sushi and
cooked foods. They're eager
to please, and will make almost
any kind of menu modification
you want. Food is very good.
Eat in, drink in, or take out.
For good seafood in a non-fancy environment, it
was hard to beat
Milford Seafood. They had a
huge selection of fresh finfish and shellfish,
including lots of lobsters, and multiple varieties of
home-made clam chowder, to eat-in or take-out.
For awhile they even had a Japanese food counter
with sushi and miso. Sadly, they closed in
November 2006, to be replaced by a pizza place.
C'mon folks, does Milford really need more pizza?
Dave's Seafood is
gone, too. The food
was super, Dave was
friendly, and the
window art was fun; so
we'll keep the picture
here as a memorial.
For delicious cakes, and breads of endless ethnic origins,
Ambrosia Bakery is an excellent choice. This is the place to
go if you need an elaborate wedding cake, or just want to
make some incredibly good sandwiches or munch on a sweet
snack. Full line of pastries, donuts and rolls.  272 Naugatuck
Avenue, Devon, 876-5077. They have a new branch in the
shopping center with Marshall's and Hometown Buffet on the
Post Road.
You can get good hot dogs at Goldies (formerly The
Greeks) on Cherry Street and at
Five Guys (in the Home
Depot shopping Center in Orange, and at
Jimmies in
Savin Rock; but the absolute best in the area are at
Danny's, right across the bridge at 940 Ferry Blvd. in
Stratford.  Lots of toppings to choose from, and available
in standard and "foot-long" sizes (if you like hotdogs, it
would be stupid not to get the long dog.) Dogs have a
perfect "snap" and are served on toasted rolls. Danny's
has been in business since 1935, and has have plenty of
time to perfect the hotdog art. This is not a glamorous
place -- you can stand at an indoor counter or sit at an
outdoor picnic table.  You can also get burgers, waffle
fries, HOT chili, and other yummies.
Best french fries in the area (and maybe in the world) are at Five Guys,
in the Home Depot shopping Center in Orange. Even the "small" portion
is huge. Hotdogs and hamburgers are very good. Burgers are served
well-done, only; so if you like your burgers juicy, cook them at home..
